Nationally, 80 percent aren’t fitted properly.
The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, Illinois State Police and Pioneer Press have invited area residents to bring their cars and child seats to Pioneer’s Glenview Headquarters at 3701 West Lake Ave. to make sure everything fits together for optimum safety.
Police officers and trained technicians from various departments, including Wilmette’s, will check and reinstall seats Saturday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The service is free.
“Even small errors can make the difference in whether a child is injured in an accident,” District 15 state police Commander Tami Haukedahl said.
The Kohl’s Children’s Museum will lead kids in craft-making while their car seats are being inspected. Starbucks is sponsoring a free refreshment table.
For more information, see the Tollway’s Web site — http://www.illinoistollway.com/ — or contact Pioneer Press circulation director Jay Beaton at (847) 486-7208 or at jbeaton@pioneerlocal.com.
